Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya
Chief Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka on Digital Economy
Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya serves as the Chief Advisor to the President of Sri Lanka on Digital Economy and Chairman of GovTech Sri Lanka. He assumed his role leading Sri Lanka’s national digital transformation agenda in January 2025, following a 30-year career in the telecommunications industry, including over 25 years in executive leadership.
Prior to his appointment, Dr. Wijayasuriya served as Group Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Telecommunications Business at Axiata Group Bhd., overseeing pan-regional operations across Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Cambodia. He was also the Founding CEO of Axiata Digital Services and Founding Chair of Axiata Digital Labs.
A prominent global industry figure, Dr. Wijayasuriya served on the GSMA Board of Directors (2022–2024), held the Chairmanship of GSM Asia Pacific, and served on the Board of TM Forum. His contributions to the sector have been recognized with the GSMA Chairman’s Award (2024) and the inaugural Outstanding Contribution to the Asian Mobile Industry Award (2017).
In Sri Lanka, Dr. Wijayasuriya is a Past Chair of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and Past Chairman of the Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies. He has also served on the founding boards of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Sri Lanka Institute of Nanotechnology (SLINTEC).
Dr. Wijayasuriya holds a degree from the University of Cambridge, a PhD in Digital Mobile Communications from the University of Bristol, and an MBA from the University of Warwick. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), UK.
